How to: 8 Tips on how to Take Great Pics when you don’t Have a Photographer

I did a recent date night outfit shoot with the lovely Tiffany of thestylealgorithm.. This is Part 2 of the Date-night outfit series, check out Part 1 here.

I thought I would make a little fun of myself by  showing all the pics that didn’t quite make the cut, along with some tips that could be useful for taking selfies for your blog when you don’t have a photographer.  I don’t have one, hence why you won’t see many outfit posts.  They are quite the hassle if you are alone.  But thanks to Tiffany, I now have some good tips that will hopefully lead to more outfit posts.

First, Remember to hide the remote, that remote is the easiest way to ruin an otherwise good shot.  My little hand peaking out there looks totally random and out of place.

2 – Relax and have fun.  I think this shot was a success because I’m totally relaxed and not focused on anything but laughing.

3 – pay attention to your light source.  Here I was trying to highlight the design on the back of the dress, but instead its in the shadows and only my face is catching the light.  Whatever you wish to focus on should be in the light.  Oh, and try to remember to hide the stupid remote!!

Much better, the design is totally the focus of this shot by turning my back to my light source.  I don’t have any special lighting and we were using the natural light that came through my dining room/patio door.s  Tiffany was really good at helping me identify the best lighting in my house.  But again I ruined it by forgetting to hide the camera remote.

4 – the flash isn’t always better.  What would have been a great shot is ruined by the distracting shadow on the wall.  Shadows can often be used for a good effect, but that is not what we were aiming for here.  If the pics turn out too dark, it’s relatively easy to enhance them with a photo-editing program than to try to delete the shadow.

5 – pay attention to the details and Get a pedicure, or at least touch up the toe nails before zooming in for a shoe shot.  All of the shoes shots were wasted because my toes looked so crappy.

6 – details again.  This would have looked so much better if I had lipstick on BOTH lips.  Oh yeah, and have brushed my edges a little bit more.  You really have to pay attention to the details when taking these shots as we know, so many of them end up wasted.

More details I’m afraid – Thank goodness for the blur effect, because I could totally see London!  My legs look totally amazing, but all I could focus on was my white knickers showing, so once again, wasted shot.

7 – try really hard not to look too tired as the day goes on.  Stay preppy, it does show in the photos. Models make it look easy but it really is tiring taking pictures.

8 – remember to highlight the accessories.  This wasn’t too bad a shot, only my arm is totally covering up the clutch, which I was trying to highlight.

BTW, This is the gorgeous Tiffany!  Super casual.  She stood in front of the camera to take a test-shot and it turned out beautiful and effortless.  This lady is a pro, even in shorts she looked way better than I did! Bravo, and thank you.  Her level of confidence in front of the camera is astounding.  And I guess that is an extra tip, be confident, feel confident.

So that’s a it, quick list of how-to take good pics of yourself.  Besides enthusiasm, energy, and paying attention to the details, the other really key factor is your equipment.  Buying a remote makes it much simpler than using the camera timer, and much faster.  And a tripod is a must – thanks Tiffany for bringing yours along.  It was fantastic, truly thankful my dear!  I continue to be in total awe of bloggers who do this all the time.

As always, thanks so much for stopping by.  I appreciate each and everyone of you.  And I would love to hear any other tips on how to take great selfies!
