Sunday Riley Luna Sleeping Night Oil

*all items purchased with my own funds at sephora

I have a huge zit on my face after using this product.  The angry type that leaves you crying.  Yes one, but I’m old, one when your skin is typically smooth, is a travesty.  I saw all those people loving it on Instagram and YouTube and plunked down my money.

But let me start at the beginning.  As you know, I’m in my late thirties and determined to fight the wrinkle/large pore battle.  As much as I like to act like I’m 25, I have to admit that I no longer look 25.  So basically, I convinced myself that I needed to add a retinoid product to my arsenal –  which mainly consists of glycolic products.  I did my research and found that it’s now safe to use the two together so I went looking for the most effective over-the-counter products.  This one has such a loyal following on YouTube and IG that I totally bought into the hype.

BUT I WANT MY MONEY BACK SUNDAY RILEY.  Not only do I think the product didn’t agree with me, didn’t make a difference in the appearance of my skin, it also smells like sh*t and costs way too much money.  Thankfully I purchased mine for 20% off during the VIB sale but it’s still getting returned.

Besides the zits, and the slightly itchy skin when I first started using it, I just saw no difference.  My pores didn’t appear any smaller in the weeks that I have been using it.  I’m not glowing any more than usual (hehehe) and it just felt like I added something stinky to my routine with no real “transformational” benefit.  So many reviews on Sephora claim amazing results after one nights use and I’m over here… waiting.

The ingredient list looks pretty amazing, and I was quite impressed with the blue colour of the oil – it contains blue tansy, and some blue dyes, probably for marketing purposes. Plus the particular form of retinol (transretinoic ester) seems to have limited data backing it up per Beautypedia.

It also says its fragrance free yet contains some oils that are usually pretty fragrant such as blood orange oil and neroli orange.  But I swear they DO need to add a fragrance to this.  My husband came into the bathroom as I was applying this and told me that was my worst fart ever!  I tried to convince myself that since it stunk so bad it had to be working right? nope.

I’m not giving up on the idea of retinoids, just on this particular trans-retinoic acid. I’ve bought the Dr. Brandt retinol set and will have a review on them probably in the new year.

What about you?  Do you use this product, did it work for you or did you hate it like I do? Let me know your thoughts.  Also, if you have any suggestions for retinol products (non-prescription), I would definitely appreciate it.

Stay blessed and thanks for stopping by.

  1. This oil was in my beauty wish list and even if it’s expensive I was thinking about buying it, because it seemed to be a great product! I think I’ll stay loyal to my beloved Tata Harper Replenishing Nutrient Complex (even if it’s not the same). I receive Elle newsletter and in the last one, or the second to last, there were a list of retinol products (but I still have to read it, yet).

    1. I think for the people it works for, it really is a great product. But I just didnt see the difference in my skin to justify the price, even the sale price since I got it for 20% off. I haven’t given up on retinoil products as a whole, just this one. I’ll have to check out the Tata Harper product. Thanks for stopping by.

  2. You are trying to kill me tonight. I’m dying over your husband’s comment! I’ve never tried that oil but I have the Sunday Riley Good Genes Treatment which I like. Salma Hayek’ s line has some retinol capsules that gets good reviews.
